Using the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach

Gentle, sustained pressure to facilitate the melting and release of fascial restrictions in the body, relieving pain and discomfort and allowing freedom of movement and ease in the body and mind.

My Philosophy

I believe every body has it's own wisdom to find authentic healing. My goal is to help guide you into your body and tap into that wisdom. By doing so, restrictions in the tissue are released, allowing the space your body needs to heal. The body just needs a little guidance and encouragement to break holding patterns and find a new way of being. I truly believe we all have unlimited potential; it's just a matter of tapping into it.

All healing is release.

- A wise friend

My Story

Ever since I was young I've wanted to help people, but was unsure of my path to do that until I discovered myofascial release. I originally wanted to be a nurse, following in my lovely mother's footsteps, but after pondering it for a good while, it didn't seem right for me. In 2009, while living in Austin, Texas, I went to massage school and learned Swedish and deep tissue massage. To be honest, it wore me out. While I still love a good relaxing traditional massage, I felt that it wasn't getting to the root of healing of people's aches and pains. People kept coming back to me with the same issues, over and over. I had heard the term "myofascial release (MFR)" here and there for years, but didn't look into it much. It wasn't until I stumbled upon a John Barnes seminar that things started to really click for me about how the way our magnificent bodies work. While learning the techniques taught at this seminar, I had many realizations, not only about fascia (which has not been properly talked about in a lot of medical fields, including massage), but about the mind-body connection that fascia is a conduit for. I knew after this seminar that using myofascial release would be an integral part of my path - for my own continued healing and for others.

My own journey of healing and finding this new way of living has been years in the making, and as with everything in life, is still in process. Never in my life have I felt the way I do about "work" like I do now. There is a passion ignited in me, and I would love to share it with others as much as I can.

I also wanted to share some things I do in the other parts of my life. Meditation and Iyengar yoga have changed my life incredibly, so I love doing them almost daily. Hiking in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains with my wife, Lauren, is another lovely pastime. Lauren and I love hanging out and cuddling with our sweet kitty, Kali, and cooking and making music! Lastly, being with community is a huge part of life. I have found that for me, community and connection are some of the best healers.

With the John Barnes MFR Approach, I have completed Myofascial Release Levels 1 & 2, Myofascial Unwinding, Advanced Myofascial Unwinding and Myofascial Mobilization, with many more to come in the future!

What is fascia?

Fascia is the three dimensional web of connective tissue that runs head to toe throughout the body, wrapping in and around every organ, bone, nerve and muscle - all the way down to the cellular level. One of the most interesting things about the fascial system is that it is one continous structure - it has no beginning or end. Think of it like a spider web or knitted sweater. Like with the sweater photo below, if fascia is moved one way or another, it will affect the rest of the structure in some way. If we had no fascia in our bodies, we would just be a gooey mess on the ground.

Healthy fascia should be flexible and easily stretched when moved. Stress, physical injury, and unprocessed emotion can lead to restrictions in the fascia, causing a tightening and hardening effect (fascia can bind to a pressure of up to 2,000 pounds per square inch!). This can lead to loss of mobility, pain, headaches, and host of other challenging conditions. Fascial restrictions need to be released in order to allow the body to move freely and with ease.

What is MFR?

The John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach consists of the gentle application of sustained pressure into fascial restrictions. This essential "time element" has to do with the viscous flow and piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate. This allows the fascia to slowly and gently return to it's natural fluid-like state. Techniques may be held anywhere from 2 to 15 minutes, depending on the conditions in the tissue.

Each myofascial release treatment session is performed directly on skin without oils, creams or machinery. This enables me to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia.
